Vetcor supports 900+ veterinary practices across the country, all managed by a lean facilities team of just six people. Jim Agan, Vetcor’s Vice President of Facilities, oversees real estate, maintenance, and construction across that footprint. As Vetcor’s project volume grew, especially after its 2023 merger with People, Pets & Vets, Jim needed a more organized way to handle the technology side of remodels, new construction, and other capital projects.
That's where MellinTech came in. What began as an introduction through Vetcor’s expanded IT team became an ongoing partnership supporting major renovations, construction projects, and other site-level technology needs.
Before MellinTech, Vetcor didn’t have a structured way to support onsite IT work during projects. Jim explained that his internal IT team simply didn’t have the bandwidth to get into the field, especially before the merger expanded the department. That left Vetcor relying on electricians, local IT providers, or whatever ad hoc solution was available to get a job done.
The results were inconsistent. Wiring quality varied. Coordination was messy. Accountability was unclear. In Jim’s words, it was “not always pretty.”
MellinTech helped replace that ad hoc model with a more organized process. Once Vetcor began involving MellinTech in major renovations and construction projects, their team had a dependable partner that could work directly with general contractors, coordinate with internal IT, and help ensure network infrastructure and equipment were installed correctly the first time.
At the start of a remodel or new build, Vetcor decides whether the general contractor’s electrician will handle the wiring or whether MellinTech will take that on directly. From there, Vetcor’s IT team and MellinTech determine what's needed from a network and equipment standpoint and make sure those elements are installed properly.
In practice, Jim’s team connects MellinTech directly with the general contractor, and most of the coordination happens between those two parties. That keeps the project moving without requiring constant oversight from Vetcor’s facilities team. If needed, the Vetcor project manager assigned to the job steps in to help solve issues, but Jim said that in most cases MellinTech and the GC simply work it out and get the job done.
For Vetcor, this has been especially valuable on network-related work. Jim described MellinTech as their go-to partner for network support, updates, upgrades, and equipment installation because those are the items that need to be done right so the hospital doesn’t need to be touched for a while.
MellinTech brought structure and consistency to technology work that had previously been pieced together site by site.
• A more organized process
Vetcor moved away from relying on ad hoc local support and now has a repeatable model for handling technology in remodels and new construction.
• Less oversight for the facilities team
By connecting MellinTech directly with the GC, Vetcor avoids getting pulled into day-to-day scheduling and coordination unless a problem truly needs escalation.
• Adaptability in complex projects
Jim pointed to a project in Wheaton, Maryland, where municipal issues and the realities of an older building caused multiple pauses. MellinTech stayed flexible and stepped back in when the project was ready to move again.
• Reliable emergency support
When something changes or needs immediate attention, Jim said MellinTech has consistently found a way to respond within the needed timeline.
Today, Vetcor treats technology as a standard part of project planning. This approach helps keep remodels and new construction projects aligned, on schedule, and ready for the site team. As a result, Vetcor has greater peace of mind, less stress on their internal team, and confidence that when and where support is needed, MellinTech will take care of it.
As Vetcor continues managing construction work, remodels, and other capital projects across its large footprint, MellinTech remains a trusted extension of both the facilities and IT teams
Since 2002, MellinTech has partnered with multi-location organizations to plan, build, and standardize technology across offices nationwide. We augment in-house IT teams and are best aligned with organizations operating 25 or more locations. We focus on three things:
1. New Construction: Design and installation for network, low-voltage cabling, Wi-Fi, A/V, and device connectivity so every site is ready on day one.
2. Rollouts: Coordinated multi-site programs for M&A conversions and technology upgrades, from discovery and standards through site execution and closeout.
3. Moves, adds, and changes: On-site field services to relocate, replace, or expand equipment, cabling, and racks across existing offices with minimal disruption.
